I sure wasn’t expecting that! I was given the Susie Gray Founder’s Award last night for my work and presentation here at the Smithsonian Craft Show. What an honor! Susie founded this show about 40 years ago, and went on to have close ties with the League of New Hampshire Craftsmen, which is of course near and dear to my heart. I built myself a little rotary table jig for milling out pivot reliefs on folding knife liners/scales. Cutting in the reliefs allows the blade to pivot more freely and eliminates rub marks. It’s just one way to accomplish those things, and it made sense to start here. #foldingknife #foldingknives #slipjoint #machining

Been working on some feather damascus lately! I love this steel. My next step will be to scallop the edges in an offset pattern, and then I’ll forge them back to straight; this will transform the feathers into “River of Fire” damascus. #damascussteel #featherdamascus #patternwelding #mastersmith

Spring? Yeah, not so much.
I learned how to make a slipjoint folder this weekend! A slipjoint is a fairly simple style of folding knife, in that it does not actually “lock” in the open position; rather, it is held quite stiffly in position by spring tension. This makes the build pretty straightforward, and results in a classy, simple, streamlined knife. I am looking forward making more of these. #handmadeknife #edcgear #customknife #customfoldingknives

I made this little guy over the weekend with instruction from my buddy @theotherkshurst using a pattern (design) called the Zulu Spear, popularized by Tony Bose.
