Common Questions

How much does a custom knife cost? How do I take care of my new knife? What is damascus steel?

If you are here and you aren’t a custom knife maker or bladesmith yourself, chances are good that you’ll have some questions about what I do and about the work I produce. I get some questions more than others, so I’ve tried to put together some of the most common inquiries.

Sharpening Your Blade

Pretty much everybody owns at least one knife, and most of us use them on a daily basis. But most people have never cut with a truly sharp edge, and even fewer understand what an edge really is, how it works, or how to sharpen one.

Start A Custom Project With Me

A custom knife is a very personal object, so the process for ordering one is personal too. Send me an Email and we’ll discuss what you are looking for. We will talk until we are both satisfied with all aspects of the project, and then go from there.

Pricing ranges from $100 – $10,000+, and lead time depends on the complexity of your project, and my existing schedule of work commitments.

Artist’s Statement

I wake up every day excited to get out to the workshop. I usually have a piece of steel in my hand by 7:15 each morning. The work is mentally and physically demanding, and I get to see the results of my effort immediately. The workshop is my happy place.

Community of Craft

As I found my way into the world of bladesmithing, I discovered a passionate community of makers and craftsmen. I was struck by how quickly I was welcomed into that community. It was clear right away that most knife makers who had been around for a little while were eager to share their knowledge and welcome me into their world.

In the years since, forums and social media have made the community stronger and more accessible than ever. I am proud to be a member of that community with my own commitment to building and sharing knowledge.
